An explosion inside an apartment north of Quartz Hill Road in Redding forced several residents to evacuate the building. According to the fire department, no one was injured.

The explosion was reported as an apartment fire just after 1 p.m. 17 Monday on the 1000 block of Delta Street. It remained under investigation Tuesday.

The incident “displaced” exterior walls of the two-story apartment building and caused significant damage to the structure, Guido Concello of the Redding Fire Department said in a statement released Monday night.

It also prompted a visit from building officials to evaluate the structure’s safety.

When Redding firefighters first arrived at the scene, they saw no smoke or fire from outside. It was when they investigated inside the building that they found a small, smoldering fire inside a bedroom and clear signs of something exploding, the affidavit said.

The fire department did not have a dollar amount for building and contents damage.
