Metro outage sweeps Iowa, leaving thousands without internet

Metronet is experiencing a power outage across the Midwest that has tens of thousands of customers without Internet access.

The Des Moines Register contacted Metronet, but the company did not immediately respond. Information on the reason for the outage is not available.

Where does Metronet operate in Iowa?

Metronet serves Iowa communities including Ames, Bettendorf, Cedar Falls, Davenport, Des Moines, Mason City, Sioux City, Urbandale, Waterloo and West Des Moines along with dozens of others, according to the company’s website. The ISP recently extended to Council Bluffs.

How many people are without internet because of the Metronet outage?

Outage reports started around 1 a.m. with just under 5,000 people reporting connectivity issues on the site Down detector.

By 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, more than 12,000 people nationwide had reported a crash at the site. Reports dropped around 7 a.m., with about 800 people reporting problems.

Where were the areas affected by the Metronet outages?

The biggest outages in the state appear to be in central and southwest Iowa. Other affected areas include Minneapolis, Chicago and St. Louis, according to Down detector.
