In a highly anticipated rematch with Seth Rollins serving as the special guest referee, Drew McIntyre defeated CM Punk at SummerSlam on Saturday.

The growing tension between Rollins and Punk finally came to a head as the two engaged in an argument mid-match, with The Best in the World questioning The Visionary’s impartiality.

Finally, Punk hit the guest referee with the Go To Sleep.

However, as The Visionary went down, McIntyre landed a low blow and then connected with the Claymore Finisher. Rollins regained consciousness enough for the three-count.

Punk, however, was so focused on retrieving the bracelet with his wife and dog’s names on it from McIntyre that he lost his chance to win the match.

To add fuel to the fire, McIntyre again took the bracelet from the fallen Punk before leaving the squared circle.

The conflicts between Punk and the Scot began shortly after The Second City Saint’s return to WWE in November, when McIntyre made it clear he disliked him. However, it was the Royal Rumble that ignited their feud.

Punk made it to the final two of the men’s Rumble matches before being eliminated by Cody Rhodes, but suffered a torn triceps during the match, which sidelined him for several months and prevented him from competing in WrestleMania 40.

When Punk announced what happened, McIntyre confronted him, said he prayed for him to get injured, then attacked him.

Punk’s loss was in many ways The Scottish Warrior’s gain, as it seemed The Best in the World would have to face Rollins for the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania, with McIntyre taking his place in the match.

The Scot defeated Rollins at The Show of Shows to become the new world champion, but the celebrations only lasted a few minutes as Punk emerged from his spot at the commentary table to attack McIntyre while Drew taunted him.

This allowed Damian Priest to cash in his Money in the Bank contract on McIntyre.

From that point on, Punk and McIntyre decided to make each other’s lives difficult, and that’s exactly what they did.

Punk cost McIntyre his World Heavyweight Championship match against Priest at Clash in the Castle in his native Scotland, and the Scot responded on the following episode of SmackDown by beating Punk to a bloody pulp in his hometown of Chicago before ripping off his bracelet.

Then, after McIntyre won the Money in the Bank contract at the premium live event of the same name, he attempted to cash in the contract that same night during a world title match between Priest and Rollins, but Punk again interfered by hitting him with a steel chair, allowing the champion to retain the title.

This rekindled Punk’s rivalry with Rollins, as The Visionary expressed his belief that The Second City Saint had cost him the title and should not interfere in his business.

When Punk recently announced that he had finally been cleared to wrestle, Raw General Manager Adam Pearce came up with a plan to keep things going by naming Rollins as the special guest referee for the Punk vs. McIntyre match at SummerSlam.

Regardless, the match was predictably chaotic, and McIntyre thrived in the setting, defeating Punk in his first televised singles match since returning to WWE.
