The Vice President and Flag Bearer of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Saturday joined the chiefs and people of Ga Mashie to celebrate the Homowo 2024 festival.

The Vice President was welcomed by Ga Mantsɛ, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru, Gbese Mantsɛ, Nii Ayibontey and Sempe Mantsɛ, Nii Adote Otintor.

“It was a beautiful display of culture, accompanied by renewed bonds of family and friendship. Ghana truly has a heritage worth celebrating,” Bawumia said in the post.

Bawumia wished all the residents of Gas a year full of opportunities.

The Ga people celebrate Homowo, which translates as “hunger hoots,” in remembrance of a devastating drought-induced famine that occurred during their history in pre-colonial Ghana. The festival begins in August with the planting of crops (mainly maize and sweet potatoes) before the rainy season begins.

Noise is prohibited during this period as it is believed to inhibit crop ripening.

Although it is a traditional Ga holiday, many other ethnic groups also take part in the celebrations.
