Delhi High Court allows Ashneer Grover to travel to Qatar under conditions

SUMMARY

The court of Justice Sanjeev Narula found that the petitioner had appeared before the investigating agency wherever he was summoned.

The lawyer representing Grover argued before the court that even if Ashneer would attend a personal meeting abroad, his family would remain in India and hence “there is no possibility of absconding”.

Grover and his wife Madhuri moved the Delhi High Court earlier this month, challenging the lookout circulars issued against them by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police for allegedly misappropriating funds worth INR 81 crore from BharatPe

The Delhi High Court has accepted the petition of BharatPe Co-founder and former CEO Ashneer Grover is seeking permission to travel abroad to Qatar and the UK, subject to certain conditions.

The court of Justice Sanjeev Narula found that the petitioner had appeared before the investigating agency wherever he was summoned.

The Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing opposed the travel request, raising serious concerns that if Ashneer and his wife Madhuri travel abroad together, they might not return.

However, the lawyer representing Grover argued before the court that even if Ashneer would attend a personal meeting abroad, his family would remain in India and hence, “there is no possibility of absconding”.

“I created a start-up and my whole life is on hold,” he added.

The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear Madhuri Grover Jain’s plea later today.

Grover and his wife Madhuri, a former HR manager at BharatPe, moved the Delhi High Court earlier this month, challenging lookout circulars issued against them by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police for allegedly misappropriating funds worth INR 81 crore in the payments firm.

In a plea filed in the Delhi High Court, the husband-wife duo has also sought permission to travel abroad together to the UK and UAE in September and October.

Justice Narula then sought a status report from the Delhi Police and listed the matter on the agenda for September 17.

It is pertinent to note that the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police had filed a case against Grover, his wife Madhuri and other family members in 2022 for allegedly committing a fraud of INR 81 crore in BharatPe.

A lookout circular was issued against them at the request of the EOW, banning the couple from travelling abroad without court approval.

In May this year, the Delhi High Court allowed the couple to travel abroad, provided that their spouse remains in India while one of them travels, and asked them to furnish a surety of INR 80 crore.

Further, Justice Subramonium Prasad then ordered the husband and wife duo to surrender their Emirates cards to prevent them from fleeing to the UAE, given that they are golden visa holders.
