Why Frozen’s Josh Gad Regrets Using His Own Voice for Popular Character Olaf: ‘It Was My First Big Mistake’

Josh Gad has admitted that he regrets voicing the popular character Olaf.

The 43-year-old actor, who recently said the Chris Farley biopic is “very personal” to him, admitted on Tuesday that he wanted to “create a different voice” for the snowman since Frozen fans often recognize him in public.

“If I could do it over again, I wouldn’t do my voice for that snowman. I would do a different voice,” he said. His comments can be heard in a clip shared on TikTok by Fan Expo Canada.

He provided the voice of Olaf in the first installment of Disney’s Frozen series in 2013, as well as its highly anticipated 2016 sequel.

“It’s very weird to be in the supermarket and have a little kid who does that (turns head slowly). That was my first big mistake. I try to give it to them when I can,” he joked.

Josh Gad admitted he regrets voicing the popular character Olaf; seen in October 2023.

He provided the voice of Olaf in the original 2013 Disney Frozen film series and its highly anticipated 2016 sequel.

“People tell me I have a very unique voice. People seem to like my voice, I try to show it whenever I can,” he said.

As reported by Screen Crush, Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee previously admitted that the beloved character was almost written out of the original film.

She revealed that the first feedback she received was “kill the snowman.”

Fortunately, Josh’s witty take on the character appealed to the filmmakers, who created Olaf as a snowman made by the main characters, Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel), as children.

The flagship film was a box office hit in 2013, grossing $1.2 billion worldwide.

Six years later, the highly anticipated sequel also dominated the competition, grossing $1.450 billion.

As announced in February last year, a third installment of the Disney animated series is planned to hit theaters on November 24, 2027.

More details about the film were released during this year’s D23 event in Anaheim, California.

Plot details for Frozen 3 have not yet been revealed, but Variety reports that the songwriters from the first two installments, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, are returning.

“They told us about the day and a little bit about what they were thinking,” the two told Collider in an interview last March.

“That really excited us. Now we have to let Hollywood do what they do, but we were really excited about their ideas.”

The studio is so confident of the third installment’s success that Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed on Good Morning America last November that a Frozen 4 is also in the works.

“If I could do it over again, I wouldn’t do the voice of that snowman. I would do a different voice,” he said at the convention; Josh seen in 2019.

Disney’s animated film franchise is set to have a third installment, hitting theaters on November 24, 2027. It was announced in February last year; cover of Frozen 2 from 2019.

“Well, I’ll give you a little surprise,” he said at the time. “We’re working on Frozen 3, and we might be working on Frozen 4.”

“But I don’t have much to say about those movies right now. But Jenn Lee, who created Frozen, the original Frozen and Frozen 2, is hard at work with her team at Disney Animation on not one, but two stories.”

As previously reported by Dailymail.com, Kristen Bell (Anna), Idina Menzel (Elsa) and Josh Gad (Olaf) are set to return for the third installment — there’s still no word on whether they’ll reprise their roles for the fourth installment.
