Princess Diana made a bold fashion statement.

The late royal turned heads at the 1996 Met Gala when she hit the red carpet in a memorable satin gown.

Designer John Galliano has recalled working with the Princess of Wales on her iconic look ahead of the world’s most prestigious and glamorous fashion event.

The Princess of Wales attracted attention at the 1996 Met Gala when she collaborated with fashion designer John Galliano.

“I remember one day we all jumped in an old van and went to London and met Princess Diana. She was invited to the Met and she was wearing one of my dresses,” Galliano recalled during the Hulu documentary In Vogue: The 90s.

Princess Diana was set to appear on the “world’s most influential red carpet” months after her divorce from the future King Charles was finalised.

Galliano spoke in detail about the work that accompanied Diana’s appearance on the red carpet.

“It was like a blessing. Well, wow,” Galliano shared. “We went to Kensington Palace and talked about drawings. I tried to push for pink, but she didn’t want to. ‘No, not pink!’ It was really, really fun.”

Princess Diana attended the Met Gala wearing a navy satin gown with bold lace straps and a matching shawl draped over her shoulders.

When describing the fashion project, you could watch old footage of the designers working on Diana’s dress for the Met Gala.

“We ordered the dress and did the fittings later, everything turned out beautifully… the corset, everything was fine,” he added.

“We fast-forward to the event, and all I remember is her getting out of the car,” Galliano recalled, catching his breath. “I couldn’t believe it. She had ripped her corset.”

“She didn’t want to wear a corset. She felt so liberated. She ripped the corset off. The dress was much more… sensual,” he mused.

Princess Diana attended the Met Gala in a navy satin gown with bold lace straps and a matching shawl draped over her shoulders. She completed her sultry look with a pearl choker and matching earrings.

Princess Diana was set to appear on the “world’s most influential red carpet” months after her divorce from the future King Charles was finalised.

During the screening of the fashion documentary, old videos of the late Princess of Wales were shown, showing the princess exuding confidence as she appeared on the red carpet.

“The cameras went crazy. The paparazzi were blinding… which made the dress really shine and the jewelry and everything else,” Galliano emphasized.

At the time, the fashion designer was creative director at Dior.

In 1994, the Princess of Wales gained notoriety when she wore an off-the-shoulder little black dress on the same evening that her husband, then Prince Charles, confessed to infidelity on national television.

“Well, wow! Diana was my first haute couture client,” Galliano noted.

This wasn’t the first time the deceased royal had opted for a rebellious dressing style.

In 1994, the Princess of Wales gained notoriety when she wore an off-the-shoulder little black dress on the same evening that her husband, then Prince Charles, confessed to infidelity on national television.

The Prince wore a stunning gown designed by Christina Stambolian to the event, after Charles confirmed in an ITV documentary that he had an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
