Sophie Turner has a special cameo in new ITV crime drama

Sophie Turner says the son of real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington will appear in an upcoming ITV drama based on his mother’s life.

The six-part drama is set in the 1980s in London. Joan tells the story of how a “mother, lover, liar, thief” rose to fame. The novel was inspired by Hannington’s memories.

Turner, who plays Joan, spoke with the cast and creators, as well as Hannington herself, during a Q&A ahead of the series premiere later this month.

The action of the drama revolves around the story of Joan meeting her future husband, Boisie Hannington, played by Renegade NellFrank Dillane and how he introduced her to the criminal world and the two of them became successful diamond thieves.

She said: “In the scene where we first meet in the pub, the barman is played by Joan’s son Benny, which was really cool because that’s the moment where his parents meet.

“He got to be there and we got to be with him and it was such a weird, wonderful moment, so it was special in many, many ways.”

Turner also opened up about meeting the real Joan before filming the series and how that helped her get into character.

“I had an idea of ​​what I was doing with the character,” she said. “I basically knew it because there’s so much of Joan’s book and it’s so written in her own voice. I absorbed it. I read it about nine or 10 times, I think.

“The final piece of the puzzle was meeting Joan. The minute Joan walks into a room, she’s the star of the room. She’s a diamond, and it was her mannerisms that I didn’t quite understand, and it was just the essence of her that I was missing.

“When I finally met her, I saw this magnetic woman and I truly, honestly understood why Boisie, why so many people were drawn to her in the same way she was drawn to her jewels.”

Joan airs its first episode on ITV1 on September 29, with all six episodes available on ITVX following the first episode. The drama will air on The CW in the US.
