United Way of Rock River Valley encourages local businesses to volunteer at its annual Day of Caring event. Several businesses volunteered at various locations. Field Fastener and Midland States Bank met at the Marie Avenue Strong Neighborhood House to support the Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation.

Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation, founded by Xavier Whitford, is an agency operating out of the Marie Avenue Strong Neighborhood House. More than 20 volunteers pulled weeds, spread mulch, cleaned garden beds, trimmed trees, swept and organized the garage, and assembled teen hope boxes for the foundation.

“One of the biggest reasons I love working for Midland is because we care so much about our community. Every single one of these women with me today is participating, getting out into the community, serving the community, doing all sorts of different things,” says Tana Lee, Midland States Bank’s center manager.

Lee also says Friday meant more to her than just volunteering.

“I lost my son to suicide three and a half years ago, and Xavier was the first person to reach out to me. So to be able to give back to her after she’s given me so much on a personal level is just wonderful,” Lee says.
