Brent Venables puts in extra work after Sooners move

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables stands on the sideline during the first half of an NCAA college football game between Oklahoma (OU) and Temple at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma, Friday, Aug. 30, 2024.

Oklahoma Sooners football coach Brent Venables was spotted doing something unusual Friday afternoon after the team passed. OU hosts the Tennessee Volunteers in a highly anticipated game Saturday night, with “College GameDay” in Norman.

This is an incredibly important game for many reasons, but perhaps most importantly is the fact that it will be Oklahoma’s first conference game as a member of the SEC.

Instead of a soft opening into league play, the Sooners face the Volunteers, one of the best teams in the country. ESPN and ABC’s top commentary trio of Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Holly Rowe will be on the call of play, and the entire “GameDay” crew is on campus for Saturday morning’s show.

After a Friday preview of the Volunteers’ preparations, Rowe, who is ESPN/ABC’s lead college football reporter, caught the third-year coach doing something a little out of the ordinary.

Despite the 37-degree temperature, Venables ran up and down the steps of Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Rowe posted the video on social media, as she has done with many other sightings around Norman this week. Despite it being almost 100 degrees outside and him having just led the team in transition, Venables had work to do before a busy weekend arrived.

Regardless of the outcome on Saturday night, one thing is for sure: no one wants it more than Brent Venables.
