Strictly Come Dancing star Chris McCausland pushed the boundaries in more ways than one today.

The beloved comedian, 47, made history as the show’s first blind contestant. His partner was 35-year-old Australian Dianne Buswell.

And while his initial performance drew nationwide applause, his jokes became the topic of conversation on social media.

Chris has already proven he’s no stranger to risqué banter, poking fun at the fact that the stars “managed to be in the same room as the GP” on opening night as Dr Punam Krishan vied for the shiny ball.

Taking it a step further on the first live show of the year, Chris enraged viewers with a joke that was quite apt given the scandals surrounding the show and accusations of inappropriate behaviour from former professionals.

When asked how training went, Dianne praised Chris for “working really hard” before revealing details of the accidents that occurred before she performed a trick in which Dianne did a headstand and was caught by Chris.

‘When she suggested it, I said, “Are you crazy?”

“We screwed it up so many times. One day she kicked me in the head!

“If there was ever a doubt that I was seeing more than I was letting on, I didn’t avoid it or anticipate it… I stood there and got punched in the face.”

In response to Chris’s humour, viewer katyajcnes wrote on X: “I know the BBC HR staff felt their souls leave their bodies when they heard Chris talk about the kick.”

It’s safe to say that Chris has won the hearts of people across the country, especially after his surprising response to Craig Revel Horwood’s criticism.

“I’m too exhausted to care, mate!” he replied, then turned to the show’s main character, Mr. Mean, “I’ll take you home tonight.”

User deirdreheenan called him “comedy gold”, while GeekGirlManners joked: “URGENT NEWS: Chris McCausland has become the first contestant to WIN #StrictlyComeDancing in its FIRST WEEK.”

Chris and Dianne performed a cha-cha dance to The Beatles’ Twist and Shout, and all 15 couples hit the dance floor for the first time.

Finishing in the middle of the leaderboard, Chris scored an impressive 23 points out of a possible 40.

The studio immediately gave him a standing ovation, and the jury members admitted they had tears in their eyes as they watched him joyfully dance around the dance floor.

Judge Anton Du Beke said: “It was one of the most extraordinary things I have ever seen in my entire life.”

Head judge Shirley Ballas said: “I am in shock and very moved – fantastic.”

Speaking to Claudia Winkleman after the dance, Chris joked that the whole routine was really a load of “nonsense”, in his typically brilliant style.

“It’s like someone has sucked all the fun out of dancing and replaced it with rules!” he said.

“You have to keep your legs straight, your shoulders back, your toes out, your arms straight, you have to point your finger at something else… It took me two weeks to do it with my mouth closed,” he added, making a shocked face.

Fans of Cinema Without Borders were eager to shower Chris with praise for his extraordinary performance, considering the comedian lost his eyesight at the age of 22 due to an inherited condition called retinitis pigmentosa.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of rare eye diseases that affect the retina, causing its cells to slowly break down over time, resulting in vision loss.

Speaking to newspaper about losing his sight, Chris had previously said: “My grandmother had sight, my mother had sight. Basically, I went blind very slowly from the time I was born, so I didn’t even notice it was happening.”

He added: “They say that when you lose your vision, your hearing improves. It doesn’t. But you pay more attention to it. So when you’re sitting at a beach resort and you’re hot and you can’t see what’s around you, you just focus on how hot you are. That makes me suffer more.”

Ahead of his Strictly debut, Chris opened up about having no idea what awaits him, but viewers already have a special place in their hearts for him, suggesting next week won’t be the last time we see him dance.

All the stars will return to the ballroom next Saturday before the judges’ scores are added up, where two couples will face off in a terrifying dance-off as they fight for a spot in the competition.

The Strictly Come Dancing festival continues next Saturday at 6.15pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
