Dropping the beats… Ibiza DJ Awards

Founded in 1998 by José Pascual and Lenny Krarup, the DJ Awards have long been considered the “Oscars of Electronic Music.” Now under new management and investment after a four-year hiatus, the awards are making a welcome return to continue to promote excellence in global dance music.

The Reboot DJ Awards were always intended to replicate what had already been done, but better, so the number of awards was reduced to 19, with a surprise award announced on the night. The new categories reflect the new state of the scene, and also provide a platform for the DJ Awards to expand its reputation beyond Ibiza and promote dance music culture to a wider global audience, while restoring the integrity of the brand.

The winners of these special industry awards, in various categories, will receive trophies. They were selected by a specially appointed panel of industry professionals.

Ibiza Icon – Luciano

This award goes to someone who has had a profound impact on the Ibiza scene over a long period of time. Someone who has played in many places, grown with the island’s success and given back in a social capacity.

Cadenza boss Luciano is just such a man. He has been a DJ in the local prison, lectured in public schools, played everywhere on the island, had legendary residences, lived in Ibiza for years and made Spain his home. He has always remained true to his art and will always be synonymous with the White Island.

Ibiza Summer Party – David Guetta’s F*** Me I’m Famous at Ushuaia and Future Rave at Hi Ibiza

This award does what its name suggests. The success of an event is not judged by the number of attendees, but by the commitment to creating a unique experience, loyalty to the venue and the ability to present a wide range of creative sounds and skills and have a real impact on the dancers.

The famous Frenchman is the only DJ on the island who hosts two of his own parties and these are the only venues he plays in the summer, a throwback to how parties used to be. They very much showcase the different sides of his sound – FMIF is more commercial and VIP, while Future Rave offers newcomers a chance to shine. Both events put a huge emphasis on production and the dancers, performers and VIP experience are well taken care of.

Ibiza Track of the Summer – Adam Port, Stryv – Move feat. Malachi

Historically, it has always been a track you hear day, night, on the beach, in super clubs. And that is certainly the case this year. This track has been played by everyone from different musical backgrounds, in beach bars and the main hall, on terraces and at villa parties. It has had over 200 million streams on Spotify and has crossed over into many different worlds. It is catchy, sung together and is the true sound of summer.

What’s Hot Around the World – Keinemusik

This is a new category awarded to a brand or artist who has reached a whole new level of popularity and success over the past year. Keinemusik have done just that and have been everywhere this year, playing standout sets in Ibiza but also hosting their own unique events under their iconic cloud. They can draw crowds of up to 35,000 people at festival-sized events and always sell out, as they appeal to a wide range of clubbers from all musical backgrounds and ages. The trio have also done a lot for emerging artists, staying true to their essence and recently even raised €100,000 for charity in Ibiza.

Global Festival – Deserted Croatia

This award is given to a festival that has recently been or is being re-established and is doing something fresh on a global scale, such as revitalizing new territory, promoting a specific sound or genre, and putting a scene or venue on the map. The magnificent three-day Defected festival in Tisno, Croatia has done just that, as it sticks to the label’s famous house roots with a wonderful mix of established, new and upcoming artists. The audience is diverse in terms of age, gender and sexuality, with local and international acts performing to a house-focused soundtrack that is both quintessential and avant-garde.

Play It Back Award – Michael Bibi’s “One Life” Campaign

This award is given to a person, institution or event that has made a difference socially, charitably or in a humanitarian way. After his very public battle with CNS lymphoma and recent return to full health, Michal Bibi has focused on raising awareness of the rare form of brain cancer he suffered from. He has shined a real light on it with his One Life campaign and deserves a lot of recognition. He has raised a lot of money, including £124,832 from his Finsbury Park takeover in London, which went to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, but he also has a policy of raising awareness at his events. The one in London had a stem cell transplant charity on site to help recruit participants for the stem cell registry. This innovative, positive, altruistic act has been carried out from the dance floor up to the top, so Bibi is a more than worthy recipient.

Eye on… USA – Gospel New York

This annual DJ Awards shifts the spotlight to a different territory, starting with America, the birthplace of house music. The New York Gospel club has enjoyed huge success in just a few short years. James Huddleston and Juriel Zeligman are co-founders, and the place is well-run with a great mix of regulars who self-promote. It’s a great throwback to how the scene was when it first started in the 80s, with a serious focus on the music and the locals. The club is a great modern addition to the city, but one that never forgets the scene’s roots.
