The Arizona Cardinals continue their 2024 NFL regular season play with an NFL Week 3 game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, September 22.

This is the second of three consecutive home games for Arizona. The Cardinals are scheduled to host the Washington Commanders in NFL Week 4 on Sept. 29.

Arizona won 41-10 over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2 of the NFL season. Detroit lost 20-16 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Both teams are 1-1 this season.

Offensive lineman Jackson Barton left the game with a toe injury in the fourth quarter and was ruled out.

The Cardinal have gone for fourth down on two of their last three possessions but have failed to score on each occasion.

On fourth-and-1 from the Detroit 24-yard line, Kyler Murray’s planned run ended in failure midway through the third down.

Then, with 11:08 left in the game, the Cardinal faced fourth-and-6 at their own 48. On the second attempt, Murray passed to Trey McBride, who couldn’t hold on to the ball.

The Lions lead 20-10 with 15 minutes left in the game in Arizona.

The Cardinals have struggled on the offensive line. They haven’t been able to establish a ground game. Kyler Murray leads the team in rushing with 45 yards on five carries. The team has 18 carries for 77 yards. No running back has a carry longer than 7 yards.

Murray was also forced into several throws. Marvin Harrison Jr. has three receptions for 33 yards on six targets. Michael Wilson leads the Cardinals with four receptions for 26 yards.

On fourth-and-1 from the Detroit 1, the Cardinals sent Kyler Murray to right end on a scheduled play. He was brought down near the line for a gain. The play was initially ruled a first down, but the Lions challenged.

The officials quickly reversed their decision, ruling that Murray had injured his shin before reaching the first-serve marker.

The turnover gave the Lions 24 points with 6:02 left in the third quarter.

Dennis Gardeck dived in front of the ball and intercepted it, which could have decided the fate of the game.

The play came with the Lions facing second-and-17 at their own 36. Gardeck returned the ball 10 yards to the Lions 33.

Jared Goff, whose pass was supposed to go to Brock Wright, is now 14-of-16 for 154 and two touchdowns.

Cardinals defensive lineman Justin Jones will not play in this game due to a triceps injury.

Also out of the game are Lions defender Alim McNeill (shoulder injury) and linebacker Derrick Barnes (knee injury).

A promising second-half drive was interrupted when Kyler Murray’s pass intended for Marvin Harrision Jr. was intercepted and the ball returned to play.

The Cardinals were in Detroit 36.

Murray is 10-of-14 passing for 88 yards and one touchdown.

It was Murray’s first interception of the season and 47th of his career.

Cardinals kicker Matt Prater became the only active NFL player to score more than 1,800 points.

Prater did it by scoring an extra point in the first quarter of a game against the Detroit Lions.

As time expired in the first half, Prater added a 42-yard field goal to give him 1,803 career points.

Longtime kicker Adam Vinatieri holds the NFL record for career points scored with 2,673.

Jared Goff’s pass was deflected at the line and intercepted by the Cardinals, who ran it 50 yards for a touchdown.

However, it was called back after the referee ruled the ball had been caught with 2 minutes remaining and the officials blew the whistle to stop play. As a result, the 2-minute warning put the game back.

Fans at State Farm Stadium watching the replay on video boards protested the decision. But there was nothing to be done.

The Lions managed to score points.

Midway through the second quarter, the Lions and Cardinals continue to play perfect passing.

Detroits Jared Goff is 8-of-8 for 81 yards and a touchdown. Arizona’s Kyler Murray is 5-of-5 for 41 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals had one dropped pass, but it was nullified by a penalty on the Lions. Another potential pass was called back due to another penalty.

Arizona’s Budda Baker left the game with an injury with 8:50 left in the first half. He left the game on his own and did not visit the medical tent.

Three Lions missed the game due to injury. Linebacker Derrick Barnes is out with a knee injury.

Corner Terrion Arnold, who left the game for Detroit, is back.

There was no slowing down the Lions, who covered 70 yards on 13 plays.

The Lions scored on a 5-yard pass from Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful.

It was the third reception for St. Brown, who has 36 yards. Brock Wright also has three receptions for 24 yards. Goff is 7 of 7 for 72 yards.

Jared Goff completed a 20-yard pass on second and 15 quarters to keep the Lions going into the final quarter.

The Lions are on the 27th hole at Arizona State with a second and seventh chance ahead of them.

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray used his leg to catch the first down on a first-and-20 from Detroit’s 38-yard line, a 21-yard run that showcased Murray’s speed.

The play was part of an eight-play, 70-yard drive by the Cardinals. Murray’s 10-yard pass to Marvin Harrion Jr. on the other side of the end zone helped tie the score at 7-7.

Detroit needed just eight plays to score the first points of the game.

David Montgomery carried the ball 1 yard for a touchdown. This came after he had 14 and 9 yards on previous plays.

Quarterback Jared Goff had three completions for three attempts and 31 yards.

Result: Lions 7, Cardinals 0 (10:16 Q1)

Arizona won the toss and elected to postpone. This is the second consecutive time the Cardinals have won the toss.

Detroit will receive the ball at the south end of the field.

Before Sunday’s national anthem, a moment of silence was observed in honor of the late Al McCoy.

McCoy, who died Saturday, was the voice of the Phoenix Suns for more than 50 years.
