Royal Ballet to Present ENCOUNTERS: Four Contemporary Ballets

The Royal Ballet will present Encounters: Four Contemporary Ballets, a mixed programme of works by 21st century choreographers, including world premieres by Joseph Toonga, a former graduate of the Royal Ballet’s Choreography Residency Programme, and Pam Tanowitz, as well as revivals of acclaimed choreographic works The Weathering by Kyle Abraham and The Statement by Crystal Pite.

Pam Tanowitz presents an extended version of her acclaimed duet Dispatch, performed as part of The Royal Ballet: A Diamond Celebration in 2022. In this extended work, Tanowitz uses her distinctive, deft style to upend dance conventions.

Joseph Toonga presents a new work for Company that intertwines the idioms of classical ballet and hip-hop. This highly anticipated work is Toonga’s second for The Royal Ballet following 2022’s See Us!!

Crystal Pite’s acclaimed work The Statement was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 2021 as part of its 21st Century Choreographers programme. Combining spoken word with contemporary dance, Pite’s innovative dance drama explores the politics of boardroom management and the depths of human nature and conscience.

Kyle Abraham’s The Weathering is a gentle meditation on love, loss and memory. The music is by award-winning composer Ryan Lott, who composed the score for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Premiering in 2022, The Weathering is Abraham’s second work for The Royal Ballet following the short Optional Family, which premiered in 2021 as part of the 21st Century Choreographers program.
