Rapper Chingy is facing criticism after agreeing to perform at a Log Cabin Republicans event this weekend.

On Friday, September 20, the conservative gay rights organization announced the lineup for its upcoming Red White & Rock event. According to TMZ, the event is set to take place at Kid Rock’s Big Honky Tonk & Steakhouse in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 29, with musical performances and speeches by Donald Trump Jr. and his partner Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Social media users were quick to note the lack of recognizable names among the event’s attendees, including former Pussycat Dolls member Jessica Sutta, songwriter Chris DeStefano, and others. But one name that caught the eye of some users was headliner Chingy.

“They got Taylor Swift, but we got Chingy,” one user joked, referring to the “Right Thurr” rapper.

“Did they actually find Chingy somewhere?” wrote another.

Though the rapper has continued to release steady singles over the past decade, as well as a 2023 EP, Chingy hasn’t released a full-length studio album since 2010. In an interview with TMZ earlier this year, he claimed he was “blacklisted” and his career stalled after transgender social media personality Sydney Starr claimed in 2010 that they were in a relationship. According to ComplexIn 2012, Starr claimed she lied about her relationship with Chingy.

On Friday, some fans greeted the rapper’s appearance at the Log Cabin Republicans event with dismay, while others suggested he attended the concert because he was strapped for cash. After the hip-hop blog Baller Alert Chingy posted on Instagram detailing the negative reactions, and the latter apparently commented on it via his official account.

“I said it once. MY JOB IS TO PERFORM AND I GET PAID TO PERFORM, NOT TALK ABOUT POLITICS. NOW YOU FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO WITH YOUR TIME,” read one comment from @chingy.

After one Instagram user commented that if Chingy was “in bad shape,” “the culture would unite around him” and that he shouldn’t be performing for Republicans “who hate you and your people,” the rapper’s account responded again.

“You can’t be depressed when you just bought a pimp for $500,000,” the comment read. “These people don’t hate me because they love my music. The music is not racist and that’s how I play it.”

“All this bullshit (sic) that you guys create doesn’t bother me,” the comment continued. “I’m a performer, whether it’s political people, homosexuals or whatever, everybody loves music. I have classic records that everybody loves and I’ll perform them for them. So I hope that helps you understand (sic) that my job as an artist is to perform and create timeless music. And I did.”

According to RootChingy is back Baller Alert posted another tweet, this time claiming he had pulled out of the Red White & Rock event and explaining that he is not a supporter of Donald Trump.

“Y’KNOW WHAT BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO BE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS MESS. I REJECTED THE SHOW AND NO I AM NOT A SUPPORTER OF TRUMP OR ANYONE ELSE BUT CHINGY. THANKS TO YOU (sic),” the comment read.

However, on Monday, TMZ reported that Chingy’s representative confirmed that the rapper will perform at the Log Cabin Republicans event in Nashville this weekend. The rapper’s name still appears among the names of artists whose performances are scheduled on the group’s website.
