Shaun Rooney: St. Mirren suspends defender over ‘alleged incident’ in Glasgow city center | UK news

St Mirren have suspended defender Shaun Rooney over an “alleged incident” in Glasgow city centre.

The Scottish Premiership website said the player had revealed his involvement in the reported incident, details of which have not yet been made public.

A full investigation is underway and in the meantime Rooney is suspended “precautionally”.

In a statement on Thursday, the Paisley club said: “St Mirren Football Club has today suspended Shaun Rooney on precautionary grounds after he revealed to the club his involvement in an alleged incident at Glasgow city ​​center last week.

“The club will now conduct a full investigation into this incident and will make no further comment during this process.”

Rooney started his career with Dundee United’s youth team and played for a number of teams including Dunfermline Athletic, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and St Johnstone.

The 28-year-old returned to Scottish football this summer after a two-year contract with Fleetwood Town in Lancashire, England, where former Celtic captain Scott Brown was manager for a period.
