Where are the Menendez brothers now and are they still in prison?

Brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez are still in prison since they were convicted of the murders of José and Kitty Menendez. They killed their parents in their home in Beverly Hills, California in August 1989, and after establishing an alibi, they returned home and claimed to find their parents dead. After several months of evading detection, Lyle was arrested in March 1990. A few days later, Erik turned himself in to police, and the case went to trial in 1993, with each brother tried by a separate jury.

Prosecutors then argued that Lyle and Erik killed their wealthy parents so they could inherit their fortune. The Menendez brothers’ lawyers argued instead that Lyle and Erik committed the crimes after allegedly suffering horrific psychological, emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of their father.

According to BBCthe brothers then claimed that the murders were committed in self-defense, apparently fearing that their father would kill them to prevent them from revealing what they had been through. The 1993 trials were declared invalid after the original jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Then, in 1995, Lyle and Erik Menendez went on trial again together.

The BBC reports that the judge in this retrial excluded evidence of molestation from Lyle and Erik’s defense. This time, both Menendez brothers were found guilty and convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to murder in 1996. They were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Are the Menendez brothers serving sentences in the same prison?

Initially, the Menendez brothers were not serving life sentences in the same prison, but it is believed that in 2018 everything changed. Meanwhile, Erik Menendez’s wife also posted a statement from her husband on social media, calling the show an “unfair portrayal” that contained “horrible and blatant lies.” In response to the family’s statement Monsterssaid co-creator Ryan Murphy Diversity that he finds their criticism “interesting.”
