MILWAUKEE – In a remote corner of New York State, a role-playing game (LARP) camp becomes a paradise where magic is not an act.

As campers immerse themselves in this imaginary world, they discover inner strength, heal from trauma, and emerge as heroes in both fantasy and real life.

LARP, or live role-playing, is a growing entertainment that engages thousands of “larpers” around the world.

This is the main theme of the popular documentary “We Can Be Heroes” by filmmaker Carina Mia Wong.

“Many children who attend Wayfinder typically struggle to find their place in the real world, and this camp is an incredibly safe sanctuary for them,” says Wong.

Director – We can be heroes

A local group of adult LARPers in Milwaukee meets once a month.

Joshua Blumberg has been participating for ten years. He says LARP events give participants a safe space to express themselves creatively.

“There are people you would never expect to meet in normal life. We all come together and share this environment and escape for a day and pretend we’re in another world,” Blumberg says.
