Angers – a milestone of Ligue 1 in the 21st century

On Sunday, Angers SCO will celebrate a historic feat in Ligue 1 when they host Stade de Reims at Stade Raymond Kopa.

this weekend, Les Noirs et Blancs will become the 26th French club to play 300 Ligue 1 matches in the 21st century.

The club, which produced France’s first-ever Ballon d’Or winner, Raymond Kopa, is currently engaged in its ninth season in the top flight this century.

In that time, Angers has recorded 136 defeats in the competition, while winning just 82 games in Ligue 1, giving the Pays de la Loire club a winning percentage of 27% in the French top flight.

Their highest result in the 2000s was ninth place in 2015–16. Their 136 defeats in Ligue 1 are among the most defeats by French teams in the competition this century.

Of all French clubs to have played at least 300 Ligue 1 matches in the 2000s, only FC Metz (155), ESTAC Troyes (151) and AC Ajaccio (144) have lost more top-flight matches than Angers.

In their previous top-flight campaign, Angers suffered 28 defeats, the most any team has ever accumulated in Ligue 1 over 38 games. After five match days and a return to Ligue 1, Alexandre Dujeux’s men are at the bottom of the table with three defeats.
