A journey to the hidden world of tropical bats

The library will host three Smithsonian-affiliated scientists who will teach about the extraordinary world of tropical bats. For decades, scientists at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute have studied the extraordinary biodiversity of bats on Panama’s Barro Colorado Island, where an astonishing seventy-six species coexist. Now, for the first time, the expertise of Smithsonian scientists combines with the stunning photography of National Geographic contributor Christian Ziegler to create an immersive visual journey into the fascinating world of these elusive nocturnal creatures. The Park City Police Department is hosting a joint breakfast with its partners, Christian Center of Park City, Peace House and Faith & Blue. Accepted products include paints, varnishes, solvents, motor oil, antifreeze, all types of batteries, gasoline, household cleaners, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, pool and spa chemicals, acids, propane and white fuel gas cylinders, fluorescent lamps compacts, electronic waste (computers, monitors, TVs (TVs must be able to be carried by one person only), cell phones, laptops, cables), all items containing mercury, pharmaceuticals, mattresses ($20 fee per item), and bicycles.

Event at Glenwood Cemetery with ghosts

Park City’s history will come to life with re-enactors or costumed ghosts standing on various graves and discussing life and death in the old, historic mining town. This year’s theme will be “Immigrants: The People Who Made Home in Park City.” Tours will cost $20 per person and are appropriate for ages 10 and older. It will be a fundraiser for the historic cemetery. Seating is limited and reservations are required. No dogs, please. The Park City Community Foundation partnered with KPCW radio, The Park Record and the Park City Chamber of Commerce and Visitors to host this event so that the community could be informed about the four candidates for Summit County Council: Megan McKenna, Ari Ioannides, Roger Armstrong and Tory’ Welch’s ego.

Annual Scarecrow Festival

Come to McPolin Farm and build your own scarecrow for all to see. The city provides straw for stuffing, trail support for the crow and a display package. Bring items to build a scarecrow, including a head, clothes, shoes, props, scissors and other fun, flashy accessories. You can also build a scarecrow at home and install it whenever you want. Celebrate the spirit of trick-or-treating

Prepare your Halloween costumes and go trick-or-treating in Basin Recreation! Celebrate the Spirits is a family favorite and perfect for all ages. Stop by any time during the event and enjoy festive activities, costume contests and, of course, trick-or-treating. The event will take place outside of rain, snow and sun! Are you interested in organizing your table? Sponsorship opportunities are available. Cost is $15 per trick or treat, children 2 and under are free. Parents, guardians or non-trick-or-treaters do not need to register or pay, but can participate.

17th Annual Professional Snow and Avalanche Workshops

This event will provide avalanche workers across the country with continuing education opportunities by sharing case studies and stories from various operations in various snow climates along with information that will assist them in their daily work. The workshops will be conducted in the spirit of the International Snow Science Workshops, combining theory and practice. Speakers will include patrollers, field guides and forecasters, on-road forecasters, search and rescue personnel, snow scientists, researchers and more.
