Maggie Smith tributes: JK Rowling, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey co-stars pay tribute to screen legend

King Charles III praised the late Dame Maggie Smith for her “warmth and spirit”, sharing a statement alongside a photo of the couple speaking at the Pride Of Britain awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in October 2016 .

“My wife and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” Charles said.

“As the curtain rises on a national treasure, we join those around the world in remembering with deepest admiration and affection his many great performances, and his warmth and spirit which shone through on stage and outside. »

On X/Twitter, the official city center abbey shared an image of Smith as grand matriarch Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham.

They captioned the photo: “A true British icon. Thank you for everything, Dame Maggie Smith.“

Maggie Smith has appeared in dozens of films over more than 60 years. The roles ranged from his iconic role Miss Jean Brodie’s first to his teacher Minerva McGonagall in seven Harry Potter films and Shakespeare films Othello to animation Gnomeo & Juliet.

Smith played the role of Mother Superior in the first two films of the film series.

Back in a 2023 interview on Loose womenGoldberg, who led the film as undercover nun Deloris Van Cartier, shared that she couldn’t make another sequel without her co-star Smith.

“You know, one of the things I want to make sure I do while I’m here is… I want to let Maggie Smith know that I’m serving as Mother Superior to you. Because I can’t do it with anyone but you,” she said.

“We’ll do whatever you want us to do, but we don’t want to do it without you,” Goldberg told Smith.

Smith’s fans came from all over and included former world heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno.

On X/Twitter, Bruno shared: “We met several times. I once told him as a joke, “You’re not going to attack me or scold me, are you?”

“She said, ‘What do you mean?’

“I said, ‘All the movies I’ve seen you in, you’re really strict.’

“She said ‘Act Frankie, just act.’ Now sit down, shut up and be a good boy’

“Then a big laugh from him followed by one from me. Wonderful woman and very fun to be around.

Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, says she appreciates Smith’s accomplishments more as she gets older.

On her Instagram Stories, Watson wrote: “When I was younger, I had no idea the legend of Maggie – the woman I was lucky enough to share a space with.

“It wasn’t until I became an adult that I realized I shared the screen with a true definition of greatness.

“She was real, honest, funny and honored. Maggie, there were a lot of male teachers and, by God, you held your own. Thank you for all your kindness. I’m going to miss you.

Harry Potter fans are raising their “wands” for Maggie Smith.

Fans of the film franchise will remember that in the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceHogwarts students lit up their wands and raised them to the sky out of respect for Professor Dumbledore after his death.
