Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has suggested Anthony Gordon could replace Harry Kane as England’s striker.

After the injury of Alexander Isak, Gordon will lead the Newcastle team in Saturday’s clash with Manchester City.

The 23-year-old scored from the penalty spot and impressed with his work as Eddie Howe’s side drew 1-1 with the champions at St James’ Park.

Amid the criticism Kane has received for his performances at the European Championships this summer, Cole insists Gordon could be an alternative to England.

He told TNT Sports: “I’m very impressed with his attitude in this position and I think he gives you an option.

Joe Cole says the Newcastle striker has what it takes to play for England as a No.9

I think looking from the outside at England it gives the manager food for thought because playing with him there the pressing was exceptional, as good as any number 9 performance I’ve seen in a long time. .

Not many people believe in it as much as he does and that sets the tone. Newcastle were brilliant behind the ball, y’all but. He was very important to them.

Meanwhile, England Under-21 coach Joleon Lescott believes the striker’s best performances come from the left side rather than as a centre-forward.

“In terms of involvement, you will probably get more involvement from Anthony on the left side,” said the former Manchester City and Everton defender.

“He is a winger who loves playing one-on-one, but he has worked with him for many years, especially in the U-21 team, and that is why he played for us in the tournament with the number 9.

Harry Kane has faced criticism for his performances at this year’s European Championships

“He was the No. 9 player of the tournament. He’s someone who wants to stay behind. I have never met someone who is so enthusiastic about working as hard as he does on the ball, and you can tell he puts 100% effort into everything he does.

Gordon has been frustrated this summer having played just a minute in England’s seven European Championship games under Gareth Southgate.
