Environmental Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced that the World Bank will allocate $300 million to support the Bangladesh Clean Air Project (BCAP), a press release said.

This initiative aims to strengthen air quality management and reduce emissions from key sectors. The project will be funded by an International Development Association (IDA) loan, along with a potential grant for clean cooking initiatives under the National Air Quality Management Plan.

The Advisor shared this news after a high-level meeting held at the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, where she was met today (September 29) by World Bank Vice President for South Asia Martin Raiser and World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh Abdoulaye Sect. ), adds the release.

During the meeting, the environmental advisor also called on the World Bank to help with waste management and canal renovation in Dhaka to create a ‘blue network’.

She also mentioned the possibility of supporting the Damage Fund and assistance in the implementation of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP). The advisor emphasized the government’s strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, emphasizing the importance of an integrated approach to water resources management and climate change mitigation.

World Bank Vice President Martin Raiser praised Bangladesh’s efforts to implement progressive environmental policies and reaffirmed the Bank’s support in aligning these efforts with global best practices. Abdoulaye Seck, Country Director for Bangladesh, stressed the importance of international cooperation and strategic investments to achieve long-term sustainable development goals.

Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment and other officials from the Ministry and World Bank were also present at the meeting.

Following the talks, both sides committed to closer cooperation on environmental management, climate resilience and water resources management, with a common goal of working towards a sustainable future for Bangladesh.
