Chiefs News: Travis Kelce defeats Tony Gonzalez in Elite Franchise Record

Tight end Travis Kelce has long been a standout for the Kansas City Chiefs, serving as a top target for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

This led to Kelce breaking countless NFL records, including most postseason receptions in a career (165) and most receiving yards in a season down to the wire (1,416).

Now Kelce can add another record to his long list of accolades.

Kelce is officially in tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers hosted its 917th party with the Chiefs, passing Tony Gonzalez for most receptions in franchise history.

Gonzalez played for the Chiefs from 1997-2008, recording 916 receptions for 10,940 yards. He still holds the record for most touchdowns in Kansas City history (76).

Including his time with the Atlanta Falcons, Gonzalez holds the NFL records for most receiving yards by a tight end (15,127) and most career receptions by a tight end (1,325). He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame.

This is an exciting turning point in what would otherwise be a weak year for Kelce. In three games, he recorded eight receptions for 69 yards and four first downs.

Fortunately, Kelce’s fortunes are turning after five receptions for 74 yards in the first half of tonight’s game.

Kelce was selected by the Chiefs with the 63rd overall pick in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

After a solid showing in his sophomore season, Kelce excelled in 2015, recording 72 receptions for 875 yards and five touchdowns. For his efforts, he was selected to his first Pro Bowl.

From 2013-2023, Kelce recorded 907 receptions for 11,328 yards and 74 touchdowns. During that time, he was named to nine Pro Bowls and seven All-Pro teams. He also won three Super Bowls (LIV, LVII and LVIII). He was also selected in the 2010 NDL Team of the Decade.

In addition to his new franchise receiving record, Kelce also holds the records for most receiving yards in a game over 100 yards (37), most touchdowns in a game (4), and most receiving yards in a career.

Needless to say, Kelce is well on his way to being the best quarterback in NFL history, assuming he isn’t already. If he continues at his current pace, there is no doubt that he will break other hard-fought records set by Gonzalez.
