The Maharashtra government is set to begin the long-awaited land acquisition process for the Purandar airport, which will be a significant undertaking to strengthen the region’s infrastructure. State Industries Minister Uday Samant confirmed the news on Sunday during his visit to Pune, highlighting the importance of the project for both the development of the state and the people of Pune.

Samant revealed that the state government is working with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to expedite the process. “The Purandar airport project is crucial for the overall development of the state, especially Punekars city,” he said. The minister also mentioned that this process will accelerate in the coming days. “In the next three to four days, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol and I will hold a detailed meeting regarding land acquisition. We will finalize the project model in the next eight days and then commence the acquisition,” Samant added.

Work on the Purandar airport project has been ongoing for several years and the latest developments signal a renewed commitment to seeing the project through to completion. The new airport is seen as a major step forward to reduce congestion at the current Pune airport and meet the rapidly growing needs of the city. Experts believe it will also boost trade, tourism and employment in the region.

The airport project is of particular importance to Pune, a city that has emerged as a major IT, manufacturing and education hub over the past few decades. As the city’s population and infrastructure needs grow exponentially, a second airport is seen as a necessity to sustain future growth.

Meanwhile, Samant also commented on the political developments in the state, especially with the upcoming state assembly elections. Asked about the seat-sharing formula in Mahayuti (BJP-led alliance), he said, “Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chaired a meeting on Saturday to discuss the seat-sharing formula. Further discussions will take place soon in the next round of meetings.”

As Maharashtra gears up for the general elections, the development of major infrastructure projects like the Purandar airport is expected to play a significant role in shaping the political narrative. For now, we are focusing on accelerating work on the project that Punekars has been waiting for for a long time.
