Eguavoen suffered a blow ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON qualifier against Libya

Augustine Eguavoen may have to make changes to his squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya.

According to reports, the 59-year-old, who is responsible for qualifying the Super Eagles for the Morocco showcase, has started preparing the squad for the matches.

According to a report courtesy of OwnGoalNigeria, coach Eguavoen has already shortlisted 35 players, with the list expected to be shortened to another 25.

However, ahead of the final team list announcement, the Super Eagles’ interim coach was dealt a huge blow following reports of a recent injury to one of his key players.

The Super Eagles suffered injuries

Reports from Turkey indicate that Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has suffered another injury with a sprained ankle.

The Nigerian defender, who received a red card in the UEFA Europa League match against Union Saint-Gilloise, may miss the upcoming AFCON qualifier.

According to NTVSpor, Osayi-Samuel was left out of the 23-man squad due to a foot injury he suffered in the last match.

Initially included in the Super Eagles’ squad for September’s international matches, the Nigeria Football Federation had to make a late call-up of Benjamin Tanimu from Crawley Town after the Fenerbahce right-back withdrew from the squad due to fitness issues.

Before his latest injury, Osayi-Samuel had made six appearances for Fenerbahce this season, although according to Fotmob he has yet to register any involvement in a goal.

If the versatile defender is unable to recover in time for the upcoming matches, coach Eguavoen will likely look for a replacement, with Tanimu being the most obvious choice.

The Super Eagles will face Libya on October 11 before traveling to Benina for the return match on October 15.

In recent weeks, the Chelsea star has been heavily linked with representing the Super Eagles.

However, the 59-year-old manager spoke about the possibility of the defender representing the Nigerian team.
