Toyota’s global sales fell 4% in August.

Toyota Motor Corporation reported a 4% year-on-year decline in global sales to 888,689 vehicles in August 2024, with production continuing to be hampered by recent vehicle approval scandals and a powerful typhoon in Japan. The data includes the group’s subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino. Cumulative global sales over the eight months also fell 4% to 6,976,035 units.

Toyota and Lexus global sales fell more than 3% to 826,863 vehicles in August and 1% to 6,577,090 units year-to-date (YTD), while Daihatsu’s cumulative sales fell 39% to 318,113 units year-to-date, and Hino’s sales dropped by 10%. to 80,832 units since the beginning of the year.

Group sales in Japan fell 9% in August to 109,505 vehicles, with production of the popular Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio and Yaris Cross models still suspended from June. Production of the three models resumed in early September. The company also closed all of its domestic plants in late August as Typhoon Shanshan approached. Since the beginning of the year, domestic sales decreased by 18% and amounted to 932,154 units.

Group sales outside Japan fell 5% to 888,689 in August and 4% to 6,976,035 year-to-date, partly reflecting the withdrawal of the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX in North America.

Global group production fell 13% to 808,023 in August and 9% to 6,806,258 year-to-date (YTD), with production in Japan falling 16% to 2,342,435 units, while production outside Japan fell by 5% to 4,463,823 pieces.
