The best vinyl releases of September 2024

Anyone who thought that vinyl’s comeback was just a fad was wrong: the industry has experienced a legitimate revival. As a result, music fans are interested in physical media in a way they might not have been if the decades-old medium hadn’t made a comeback. However, this does not mean that everyone only listens to their parents’ old music. That’s part of it, of course, with reissues that present classic albums in new ways. An important part of the renewed vinyl wave, however, is the release of new projects in record form, and there are plenty of them.

No matter what you’re interested in, each month brings new vinyl releases with something for everyone. Some naturally stand out from the rest, so check out some of our favorite vinyl releases from September below.

Black Star – Without Fear of Time (reissue)

For the first time ever, Black Star’s second album from 2022 Without fear of time is available on vinyl. Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli’s project has come a long way since its first podcast-only release.

Perfume genius – Too Bright (Re-release)

Perfume Genius has just finished a short tour to mark the anniversary of the release of his beloved album Too bright. He has just released a vinyl reissue, pressed on a special crystal clear LP, while the streaming version of the project included three new bonus tracks.

Built to spill – There’s Nothing Wrong with Love (reissue)

There is nothing wrong with love he is now 30 years old. Build To Spill celebrates their second classic album with the release of a new vinyl pressing on “Up Records Blue” vinyl. Like Perfume Genius, Build To Spill also completed an anniversary tour to celebrate the album’s release.

Student Q – Oxymoron (10th Anniversary Edition)

Schoolboy made his major label debut with an album in 2014 Oxymoronso this is the most important release in his discography. To celebrate, it’s releasing a new 10th anniversary edition that comes in exclusive clear and silver vinyl versions, available only at Target. But we particularly like the offering of double vinyl discs with images in which Q’s face is both camouflaged and clean-shaven. This is a groundbreaking album and a must-have for any collection.

Bob Dylan and the band – Live recordings from 1974

Uproxx’s Steven Hyden wrote of Bob Dylan’s extensive new set: “A vast dump of music data, Live recordings from 1974 collects all the famous, professionally recorded performances from the tour, numbering 431 songs (all but 14 of which have never been previously released) spread over 27 discs. This mountain of material seeks to draw attention to a small but crucial point: the ’74 tour was a fascinating crossroads for the musicians in the spotlight. For Dylan, it marked a return to live performance after an extended hiatus and the beginning of perhaps the most rigorous annual touring schedule of any rock star in the last 50 years.

Madonna – Like a Prayer (Silver Collection)

Like prayer is iconic, even though the key release celebrates its 35th anniversary. As part of the reissue of Madonna’s “Silver Collection”, Like prayer is now available as a limited edition on opaque silver vinyl. If you place an order on Rhino.com or Madonna.com, you will even receive an exclusive poster with a black and white photo from the back cover of the album.

10,000 maniacs – MTV Unplugged (Extended Edition)

MTV disconnected was an institution in its day, with 10,000 Maniacs performances in the 1990s being one of the more memorable. Now this performance, including three songs that were not included on the original release, has been pressed on vinyl for the first time ever. For many, it was their introduction to the Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith classic “Because The Night,” and it helped solidify Natalie Merchant as a star before she launched her solo career.

Cass McCombs – Not The Way EP (reissue), A (reissue)AND Prefection (reissue)

For McCombs, it all started with three releases: Not dear EP, ANDAND Prefection. Now, when all the designs are about 20 years old, they have been re-released. This is the first time these designs have returned to print since their original release in the early 2000s.

Marvin Gaye – In the Rhythm (reissue)

Motown has been crushing it with a monthly reissue series that has been going on for several months. September’s proposals include that of Marvin Gaye In Groovewith the iconic single “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”. Other highlights this month include the Mono edition Know the temptations and the Supremes Dear Child.

Children getting up – Something to Write About (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

There is something to write about is one of emo’s more iconic albums, and now it’s getting the reissue it deserves on its 25th anniversary. This release has been remastered and expanded to include several demos, including Matt Pryor’s original four-track acoustic recordings.

Gus Cannon – Come straight in (Vinyl Me, please reissue)

Cannon is an icon of American roots music, and Vinyl Me, Please honors this with a reissue of the 1963 album Enter directly. The album was originally released in an edition of 500 copies, but has now been carefully remastered for a new generation to enjoy.

Michael Hutchence – “One Way” and “Save My Life”

A pair of unreleased songs by late INXS vocalist Michael Hutchence were found in the vault and were pressed on 10-inch vinyl. The picture plate is particularly striking with its stark black images.
