Woman, 5 relatives convicted of kidnapping ex-husband to increase alimony | Mumbai News

The Ulhasnagar police have lodged an FIR against the woman and her relatives for allegedly kidnapping her ex-husband to demand a ₹20 lakh increase in maintenance.

THANE: Ulhasnagar police have registered an FIR against a woman, her brother and four other relatives for allegedly kidnapping her estranged husband to force him to increase the maintenance due to her from 2.5 thousand down 20 lakhs.

The complainant, identified as Rajesh Rohida, 44, a resident of Ulhanagar No. 3, told the police that on June 20, the complainant had gone to the market to buy sugar to prepare tea. As he reached the store, his brother-in-law stopped him and forced him into a Wagon-R. The complainant told police that the kidnapping was organized by his ex-wife and her family members. They threatened the man with an increase in her alimony payments 20 lakh which was earlier pegged at 2.5 thousand

According to the officer, when the victim refused to pay more, his ex-wife’s family members kidnapped her, took her to a secluded place and threatened her. He was held in a ruined house until September 28, and two people were assigned to protect him. During his captivity, he was threatened with death if he did not increase the amount of compensation for his wife.

The victim managed to escape and filed a police report on Saturday. Based on his report, the Thane police initiated an investigation. Based on the victim’s complaint, an FIR was registered against his wife, her brother and four others under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 140(2) (kidnapping or abduction with intent to murder or for ransom) 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with the intention of provoking a breach of the peace), 115 par. 2 (voluntarily causing harm) and 3 sec. 5 (common intention), the official said.

A senior police officer said, “A man has filed a case against his wife and her family in connection with kidnapping. We need to investigate this matter thoroughly, as the complainant claims. Notably, his wife registered a case against him in 2013 for marital cruelty, just a year after their marriage. An investigation is underway to verify the facts in this case.”
