April Kirkman traveled more than 2,500 miles to attend Carter’s 100th birthday celebration, and she wasn’t alone.

“The president has served humanity for four years and 80 years. I mean, what a life and here he is, he’s 100 years old on October 1st. Incredible. “He was born in 1924.” Kirkman said.

“Happy birthday and thank you for all the gifts you have made for people all over the world,” said visitor Carolyn Channing.

Festivities kicked off over the weekend with the annual Plains Peanut Festival and parade through town.

On Tuesday, there will be a naturalization ceremony for 100 new U.S. citizens, followed by a military overflight in four F-18 Navy planes and then in World War II-era planes. The day will end with a concert honoring the 39th president, a Plains peanut farmer and lifelong public servant.

The City of Plains will also dedicate a monument called the “Charter of Liberty,” which will permanently display replicas of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence.

“He is a good example of caring about people. He cares about both people and people,” Kirkman said.
