Two Liverpool forwards missing as Darwin Nunez and Andy Robertson train ahead of Bologna

Darwin Nunez and Andy Robertson have both handed Liverpool an injury boost after taking part in open training on Tuesday. The pair had potentially minor doubts for the Reds’ Champions League meeting with Bologna.

But Liverpool were seemingly without Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa for the training session.

The Uruguayan missed Liverpool’s 2-1 victory away at Wolves on Saturday through illness, while the Scot limped off late on with a knock. However, Reds head coach Arne Slot would play down fears of Robertson being set for a stint on the sidelines following the final whistle.

“I don’t expect it to be a big problem although you never know,” Slot said. “I think he just got a knock in the end stage of the game, maybe he was a bit tired as well.

“The guy who came in, Forbs, I knew him from Dutch competition, he made it a real fight for him as well. He got a bit of a knock but I’m expecting him to be in training Monday again, but let’s wait “

Slot’s initial assessment has now been proven right after Robertson took part in training as normal at the AXA Training Center on Tuesday morning, with Nunez also involved after overcoming illness.

The pair’s involvement leaves Harvey Elliott as Liverpool’s only other absentee, with the England Under-21s international remaining sidelined until after the October international break after fracturing his foot last month.

Liverpool opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 win away at AC Milan last month thanks to goals from Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Slot used the trip to the San Siro to hand Kostas Tsimikas and Cody Gakpo their first starts of the season, with Robertson and Luis Diaz dropping to the bench as a result.

It remains to be seen if he intends to make changes once more against Bologna at Anfield on Wednesday night, with Nunez’s return to training bolstering his options. However, the absences of both Jota and Chiesa, who have suffered from injury in the past, does act as a potential headache for the Dutchman and leave their involvement against Bologna in doubt.

Slot will offer an injury update on his squad when facing the press to preview the game at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon.
