Apple Podcasts presents the 100 most popular narrative series

New Top Series category in Apple Podcasts

Serialized podcasts are now highlighted in the new Top Series list in the Apple Podcasts app on iPhone, which also adds a new Series category and will celebrate one such show a month.

Apple Podcasts already had chart-topping playlists, but now it’s looking to highlight what may be the archetype of hit podcasts – the type of serialized storytelling used in crime shows.

“Serialized podcasts are some of the most influential programming in the podcast industry, featuring captivating voice talent and best-in-class writing and audio design,” Apple global head of podcasts Ben Cave said in a statement. “These are the stories we can’t stop thinking about and talk about even years later.”

“We are thrilled to celebrate this incredible catalog with a new Top Series playlist, Series Category and Essentials section on Apple Podcasts,” Cave continued, “making it easier for listeners to discover their next favorite show.”

Apple says its Top Series chart is the first of its kind in the industry. It will be updated continuously, and with it comes a new Series Essentials feature that highlights the one series that Apple believes best defines the category.

“I live for stories in any form – books, TV episodes, documentaries, movies, graphic novels… any story, in any form,” said MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. “There is something about a single story – one voice, a continuous narrative that builds from episode to episode and then to the conclusion.”

“I truly believe that most of the best stories take more than one sitting to tell,” she continued, “and that the best stories in the world are currently being told in podcast series.”

The Apple Podcasts Essentials series begins with “Ghost Story,” a true crime and historical narrative from journalist Tristan Redman.

The new playlist is available in the Apple Podcasts app in the Browse category. However, it seems to be taking some time to roll out everywhere, as at the time of writing it is available on the iOS app but not on the Mac.
