Hyderabad: The state of Telangana has gained dubious fame due to the higher incidence of breast cancer among women in the country. Breast cancer will remain the number one cancer among women in Telangana in the coming decade, posing a clear challenge to the state government, which must act quickly to increase the number of treatment facilities, cancer awareness, human resources and infrastructure.

Studies have shown that about 35.5 percent of cancers among women in the state of Telangana will be breast cancer, closely followed by 8.7 percent cervical cancer even in 2037.

Breast development and cancer:

It may seem counterintuitive, but there are global studies showing that developed countries have a higher incidence of breast cancer among women. If you apply this to India, most developed states such as Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka face a much higher risk of breast cancer than states in the northeastern part of the country.

A study on the projected burden of cancer in Telangana, undertaken by the renowned Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH), Hyderabad, has revealed a projected steady increase in the number of breast cancer cases.

“We have projected a continued increase in the number of new cancer cases and the resulting workload for the state of Telangana over the period 2022-2037. This may be further accompanied by limited access or utilization of the oncology care system,” an IIPH study published in PLOS ONE (July 2023), he said.

Why are breast cancer cases increasing in Telangana?

Many published studies suggest that factors contributing to the incidence of breast cancer in TS include relatively low levels of literacy among women, high tobacco and alcohol consumption among women, and a higher life expectancy than the national average. Moreover, it was found that every third woman is overweight or obese, which is an important risk factor for breast cancer. This was attributed to lifestyle changes, a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating and insufficient physical activity.

Based on the TS tumor profile developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) based on the NIMS, MNJ Cancer Hospital and Indo-American Cancer Institute cancer registries, the crude rate (cancer incidence per 1,00,000 population) of all cancer types is 109.8 among women, while the crude incidence rate for breast cancer is close to 50 and will increase to 63.79 by 2037.
