Stevie Nicks’ first single in four years is an “anthem” for abortion rights and the 2022 Dobbs decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The former Fleetwood Mac singer released the music video for “The Lighthouse” on Thursday, though in a statement she explained that the song was years in the making.

“I wrote this song a few months after Roe v. Wade was overturned,” she said. “It seemed like overnight people were asking, ‘What can we do about this as a collective force…’ For me, that meant writing a song. It took me a while because I was on the road.”

Her statement continued: “I was watching the news on TV one morning and an anchor said something that seemed like she was talking to me – explaining what losing Roe v. Wade would mean. I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night. It was September 6, 2022. I’ve been working on it ever since.

The song’s lyrics included: “All the rights you had yesterday have been taken away from you / And now you’re afraid / You should be afraid / Because everything I long fought for in my sleep is gone.”

The music video also included photos and clips from several women’s marches.

In her statement following the song’s release, Nicks emphasized how important it was to her and other women.

“It seemed like overnight people were asking, ‘What can we do about this as a collective force…’ For me, that meant writing a song,” Nicks said. “I often said to myself, ‘This might be the most important thing I will ever do.’ Stand up for the women of the United States, their daughters and granddaughters, and the men who love them. This is the anthem.”

Nicks has been outspoken about her support for abortion rights, previously calling it “the fight of my generation.” In 2020, she discussed her own abortion and stated that it was necessary to continue the band’s activities in 1979.

“I would have to leave,” Nicks said. “I knew that the music we wanted to show the world would heal the hearts of many people and make them happy.”

“And I thought, you know what? It’s really important,” she continued. “There is no other band in the world that has two main vocalists and two main writers. This was the mission of my world.”
