The acquired fourth is trying to secure jobs under the old quota system: LGED

A quarter of those eligible are trying to secure recruitment in the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) for various positions under the previous quota system, the Local Government Department announced today (October 3).

The press release said that despite changes to quota policy made by court order, efforts are being made to recruit from waiting lists created under the old system.

According to a media release, some people have taken up positions near the LGED building in Agargaon to insist on their recruitment under the outdated quota laws.

The recruitment notification for 2,237 posts in 12 categories in the LGED revenue sector – from stenographer-computer operator to community organizer and office assistants – was published on December 26, 2022. The final selection of eligible candidates was completed on October 5, 2023, after written and oral examinations , in the existing quota system established by the then government.

As per the circular of the Ministry of Public Administration dated April 17, 2023, the waiting list of candidates in the ratio of 1:2 for each post has been sealed and kept in safe condition at the Bangladesh Public Service Commission.

The waiting list was used in the event that any of the selected candidates did not join the panel or resigned after being appointed, in which case the next candidate from the list was recommended to fill the vacancy.

However, following the Supreme Court’s judgment, the Ministry of Public Administration revised the quota system on July 23, 2024.

Under the new policy, 93% of cabinet appointments will be based on merit, with 5% reserved for children of freedom fighters and Birangonas, 1% for members of small ethnic groups, and 1% for people with disabilities or from a third gender.

“In light of the current situation, the Ministry of Public Administration must decide whether to continue direct recruitment for 12 revenue sector positions in the LGED from the existing waiting list established under the previous quota system, or to create a new waiting list based on the current quota system.” we read in the press release.
