With Rosh Hashanah already underway – here’s to a happier and more peaceful year 5785 – and Yom Kippur arriving next week, it’s time to celebrate the High Holidays with food (and a short fast). Here are some of DC’s most reliable sources for honey-sweet Jewish New Year’s takeout and quick Atonement Day specials.

627 Loftstrand Ln., Rockville

Jarrad Silver is preparing to open a brick-and-mortar Bethesda store with his Jewish and Middle Eastern-style barbecue. But his Jewish holiday food truck takeout is already a tradition. His smoked brisket braised in tomatoes combines elements of Ashkenazi and Texas cuisine, and his quick celebration of Yom Kippur – available improve in Rockville or Lost Generation Brewing Company in DC (street 327 S, NE) October 11 – includes a range of sweets such as babka rolls and chocolate-tahini rugelach.

8317 Grubb Rd., Silver Spring

Many D.C.-area Jews have formed their own opinions about this 60-year-old Silver Spring deli, whether they are positive or not. Regardless, Parkway remains steadfast in providing them with matzo ball soup, smoked fish and bagels, chopped liver, brisket dinners, honey cake and challah for the holidays. To order, call 301-587-1427.

750 15th St., NW

Jewish holiday fare may be unusual for a restaurant so focused on shellfish, but if you’re not too strict about keeping kosher – and need a last-minute dinner – try the Rosh Hashanah takeout menu at this political establishment on Thursday, October 3. The menu begins traditionally with options such as gefilte fish and beetroot horseradish or chopped liver (vegetarian option available), then moves on to herb-roasted chicken, short ribs braised in red wine and halibut en papillote. The prix fixe menu is $74.95 per person and $24.95 for children 12 and under. Summer Housealso operated by the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant group, offering takeout during Christmas in North Bethesda.

3311 Connecticut Ave., NW

Stop by this modern Israeli restaurant in Cleveland Park on Friday, October 11, or Saturday, October 12, and you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a special holiday menu before or after the traditional fast of Yom Kippur. Salad with hummus topped with baked eggplant sabich; Halloumi cheese wrapped in grape leaves; sumac-crusted salmon; and braised brisket with autumn cimes are just some of the attractions.

Multiple area locations

Rosh Hashanah specials are sold out at DC’s best bagel chain, but chef Daniela Moreira has also created a Yom Kippur breakfast that will be available through Saturday, October 12. Choices include raspberry rugelach; honey-apple muffins; and huge platters of bagels with carefully arranged slices of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and jalapenos. Order online here.

4434 Connecticut Ave., NW

Yom Kippur at Mark Furstenberg’s beloved Van Ness bakery includes a gravlax platter with house-smoked salmon and bagels, traditional blinis with a pinch of cinnamon, cookies, challah and freshly squeezed oak juice. Order by calling the bakery and see the full menu for October 12 on the Internet.

If you have a lot of guests for the holidays, this reputable local catering company may be your best choice.
