Pioneer Days at the Alabama Pioneer Museum is an annual event highly anticipated by all ages interested in the pioneers who settled Pike County and throughout Alabama.

Barbara Tatom, museum director, said Pioneer Days includes activities and events for people with a variety of interests that include a large number of hands-on activities and opportunities.

“Pioneers Days include demonstrations and practical activities that children especially enjoy,” Tatom said. “One of the most popular hands-on activities is making corn husk dolls. Children especially like it, some of them have never thrown an ear of corn. Adults seem to enjoy hands-on activities as much as children.

There will be a variety of demonstrations including wagon cooking, quilting, blacksmithing, woodworking and a laundry demonstration.

“Feather making, candle dipping and basket making are popular with people of all ages,” Tatom said. “The school clerk, the general store owner, and the trackside preacher all have stories to tell about days gone by that people of all ages enjoy.”

French militia and Northern and Southern Civil War reenactors welcome visitors to their camps and share information about the war and their role in the conflicts.

Pioneer Days 2024 will take place on October 11 and 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Admission is $12 and free for members and children under five.
