For three weekends, Deutsches Haus celebrates the Bavarian festival on this side of the Atlantic Ocean with lots of brats and breweries, music and more on Fridays and Saturdays, starting October 11-12 and continuing on October 18-19 and October 25-26 at 1700 Moss St.

More than 25 different types of German and Austrian beers and wines, as well as over 20 types of schnapps, will be available to add splendor to the celebration. Non-alcoholic beers will be available, as well as other adult and non-alcoholic beverages.

Oktoberfest is the “wurst” of the times

And with these tiles you will be able to enjoy a smorgasbord of delicious German delicacies, including sausages, sauerkraut, cheeses, Bavarian pretzels, schnitzels, dinners, desserts and a whole lot of wursts. There will also be flammkuchen, a German version of pizza, nuggets and burgers for children, and “brachos”, i.e. nachos with crumbles and cheese sauce.

Blaskapelle (brass band) Lüchtringen will perform at the Deutsches Haus during Oktoberfest on October 11.

Burn off those extra calories while dancing to lively music with a variety of oompah music and other songs by local and international bands, including Blaskapelle Lüchtringen, a brass band touring the United States from central Germany. The 32-piece band will perform on Friday at 4:15 p.m., just before the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Later they will join Bier Musikanten to hear more songs.

Other groups that will perform include The Klaberheads (a three-generation group from Ohio), The Brats, Bayou Bayernans, Wurst Case Scenario, Prost, Rocky’s Holy Schnitzel Polka Band and 610 Stompers.

There will be daily beer mug competitions, Masskrugstemmen. In addition, the chicken dancers will flutter every day. The program will also include “Schnitzelbank”, a humorous German song with audience participation.

The chicken dances, but not the chicken dance.

The 6K race will be held Saturday from the house to the adjacent Fairgrounds Racetrack.

The second weekend, the Schnauzer Strut Dog Parade and Costume Contest, sponsored by Schnauzer Rescue of Louisiana, will be held on October 19 at 3:30 p.m., and costumes will be priced. We welcome all breeds of dogs. Register at nolaschnauzer.com.

Admission to the festival is $10 at the gate. Visit oktoberfestnola.com.
