Billie Joe Armstrong opens up about her life off stage.

In the new issue of PEOPLE, the 51-year-old punk rock icon reveals that his wife Adrienne, 54, and their sons Joey, 28, and Jakob, 25, inspired the songs on Green Day’s upcoming 14th album, Saviors (out Friday, January 19).

“Bobby Sox,” an upbeat hit from the new album, “started out as a song about my wife and us sitting on the couch watching Office together over and over again,” he tells PEOPLE.

Armstrong and Adrienne’s love story began in Minneapolis when they met at a Green Day concert. Now, after 29 years of marriage, they are still going strong.

“We definitely had challenges. Me and Adrienne have been through so much in life together and it’s like we made a commitment to each other. And I definitely fucked up my time as a husband and that’s how we got through it,” Armstrong says. “We started as children – now we spend middle age together. It’s a beautiful thing. We have been through so much in life and we have always been able to come out of it stronger. I will take everything good and bad; I wouldn’t change anything.

The couple, who married in July 1994, also faced parenthood together. And for the first time, Armstrong wrote a song dedicated to his sons: “Father to a Son”, a sentimental track on the album Saviors.

“I thought, ‘How can I sum this up without being too sappy?’ ” is talking about a significant cut.

As his children, who are also musicians, reached adulthood, their relationships deepened.

“As a new parent, you always want to know the right answer or find the right solution, and that’s hard,” Armstrong says. “But suddenly they come to an age where they have their own wisdom and their own solutions, and they can share them with me. It’s like coming full circle in many ways. It’s like a friendship, but it’s a broader bond that I’m really proud to have with my sons. They’re really smart people.”
