Shrek 5 will hit theaters in July 2026.

After Eddie Murphy previously revealed the film was in the works, Universal has confirmed Shrek 5 is on the way and even provided a release date: July 1, 2026.

The official DreamWorks Animation X/Twitter account posted a teaser trailer with the Shrek 5 logo accompanying the release date. In addition to the release date, Universal also confirmed to Variety that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles in the upcoming films.

When Shrek 5 is released, it will be 15 years since the last mainline Shrek film, Shrek Forever After, premiered in 2010. DreamWorks has released several Puss in Boots spinoffs in the meantime, including the critically acclaimed 2022 film The Last Wish .

Shrek 5 has been speculated to exist for some time, though today’s release date is the most concrete information we’ve had on the subject. Previously, Murphy, who voices Donkey on the series, told Collider that the film will be released next year, with a Donkey-focused spinoff to follow.

Previously, Illumination CEO and DreamWorks Animation creative advisor Chris Meledandri told Variety that DreamWorks was working on both projects, with the goal of bringing back the original cast. More vague rumors about Shrek 5’s development date back to 2016.

As Hollywood increasingly leans on established intellectual property, it should come as no surprise that Universal and DreamWorks are looking to return to the beloved fairytale ogre. According to a previous Universal press release, the Shrek franchise is the second-highest-grossing animated series of all time. The studio attempted to capitalize on its nostalgia by re-releasing Shrek 2 for its 20th anniversary in April.
