Nigel Havers opens up about ‘dark’ moment after cheating on first wife

Nigel Havers, host of The Bidding Room, once admitted he had a “dark moment” when he was unfaithful to his first wife.

The former Coronation Street actor, 72, began an affair with Polly Williams in the mid-1980s while he was still married to his first wife Carolyn. He married Polly in 1989.

In 2017, Nigel appeared on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and became emotional as he reflected on his regrets.

He told host Piers: “It either upset Caro, it upset Polly, or it didn’t upset any of them.

“Of course, it probably would have upset both of them… so that (suicide) was in the equation. It’s a very dark moment, isn’t it? I never really thought about it, I never really talked about it. I never really talked about it with anyone.”

He then spoke about his stay in a “mental hospital”. Nigel said: “I went to this place, this mental hospital. It’s strange, isn’t it? You can end up in a corner like that. But you know, I only had myself to blame.”

“I couldn’t talk anymore, I had trouble talking to anyone. I didn’t talk, I talked about anything.”

Nigel lost Polly in 2004, when she died of ovarian cancer. He married his third wife, Georgiana Bronfman, in 2007.

Of Polly’s death, Nigel said in Life Stories: “It was a tragedy. Of course, because she was determined not to die. She was extremely brave, my God, and she fought tooth and nail for six years.”

Meanwhile, Nigel, while gushing over his wife Georgiana, said: “She’s fantastic. I’m very lucky. You only live once, right? You have to make the most of it. And I’m having a wonderful time.”

Catch Nigel in The Bidding Room on 10th July from 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
