The Other Side Village, Big-D Construction Celebrate Groundbreaking for The Other Side Pavilion

Salt Lake City — Big-D Construction has joined forces with The Other Side Academy and community partners to break ground on The Other Side Pavilion, which will become the primary gathering space for The Other Side Village, a sister organization to The Other Side Academy that supports adults returning from the streets, encampments, shelters, and other transitional housing settings who are experiencing chronic homelessness.

The Other Side Pavilion, being built by Big-D, is scheduled for completion in December 2024. The pavilion will be a 2,200-square-foot building that will serve as a central space for Village residents and will include a gathering area, laundry facilities, restrooms and a kitchen.

As part of its commitment to giving back to the local community, Big-D has waived various fees on the project. Other trade partners who have pledged time, materials and/or fees include Artistic Mill, Daw Construction and Golder Inc.

“Big-D Construction would like to thank The Other Side Village for their continued commitment to our community,” said Braden Moore, Vice President of Business Development for Big-D Construction. “We are passionate about culture, family and kindness for all people. Big-D fully supports The Other Side Village’s mission to create community, family and support services to help meet the needs of every person. Creating a sense of family and kindness is at the heart of our culture. We are so grateful to be a part of this project.”

“This groundbreaking event is a key milestone for the development of The Other Side Village,” said Tim Stay, CEO of The Other Side Academy. “To date, all progress on the Village has been underground, with all utilities and site work. Today, we are breaking ground on our first building to be constructed on site. It is the first of 84 buildings to be constructed during this phase.”

The Village consists of two parts: The Other Side Prep School, a 6-12 month free transitional housing program that helps residents stabilize and develop skills to stay sober, build family connections, and become responsible for healthy behaviors needed to thrive, and The Other Side Village, a permanent housing community. When complete, Phase 1 of The Village will include 60 cottages, a clubhouse, a wellness clinic with mental health, medical, and dental services, and social enterprises offering paid employment on-site. The goal is to create a sober, self-sufficient community.
