In 2018, Nic Von Rupp went to Maverick’s on a mission. The big wave rider set out to backdoor left and boy did he do it. A new video from YouTube channel Powerlines Productions takes us back behind the scenes, showing the build-up and aftermath of Von Rupp’s epic ride.

It all started with a board—the same one Nathan Fletcher famously rode on the break. The 9’9″ yellow safety craft was shaped by cigar-chomping shaper Stretch Riedel, who, as usual, didn’t mince his words when he told Rupp, “This thing was made for left turns.” With Nathan’s permission, Stretch lent the board to Von Rupp so he could do exactly that.

As Stretch joked to Nic earlier, the pressure was immense. Although he’s usually comfortable in all conditions, the weight of approaching such an important wave while surfing a piece of surfing history actually got to him a little. “I was nervous there, you know?” Von Rupp said later. “I was thinking about how to approach from the left and all of a sudden it happens. Suddenly everyone’s going left and you really want to go, but it’s such a scary place to go, at the same time.”

It’s no surprise that Nic pulled out. He didn’t just stab the left side, he got the barrel of history. Von Rupp summed it up best: “I’m sick, man. I’m stoked.”
