Shaunie’s husband, Pastor Keion Henderson, admits to sabotaging their relationship while first wife delayed divorce for three years

Shaunie’s husband, Pastor Keion Henderson, admits to sabotaging their relationship while first wife delayed divorce for three years

Shaunie Henderson isn’t the only person in her marriage with a history of failed romances.

Her new husband, pastor Keion Henderson, publicly admitted that despite his immediate chemistry with the basketball player’s ex-wife, he was initially reluctant to discuss anything more than friendship.

During the annual Cry Out conference at Lighthouse Church in Houston, Texas, in June, he told “Dear Future Wifey” podcast host Laterras R. Whitfield that he and Shaunie were “hurt” by the divorce. His nine-year marriage to ex-wife Felecia Henderson ended in 2019 when their divorce was finalized.

The former couple have one child, a daughter named Katelyn, although Keion played an active role in the lives of Felecia’s two older children.

Shaunie was previously married to former Los Angeles player Shaquille O’Neal for seven years when they separated in 2009. Their divorce was finalized the following year, and the settlement included Shaunie retaining primary custody of their five children. The religious leader, who also lives in Houston, said his failed marriage warped his view of second chances at love.

“I didn’t want to get married and stay married because I was afraid of another divorce,” he said. “I thought, I don’t want to get married because I don’t want to fail. If I survive this, I definitely won’t survive this again. And it wasn’t about her; it was about me, and I knew my chances of surviving another marriage were slimmer than my last.”

What’s more, Keion admitted, “To be honest, I started sabotaging myself. And I probably lost six to eight months of happiness with her because I wasn’t happy with myself.”

Both parties said they had maintained a friendly bond beyond their initial face-to-face meeting, which was based on FaceTime calls. Each side agreed not to visit the other because Keion was going through a divorce. However, the arrangements eventually changed.

“Because my divorce was so complicated and drawn out, I made the decision to start dating her before the divorce was final because I didn’t want to let someone who was holding up the divorce show me how to live my life,” the now-popular pastor said.

Keion also noted that in between the time their romance went public in 2019, rumors began circulating about Shauna dating a married man. They were true, but he said he and Felecia were completely separated.

He knew Shaunie was his wife, “when I woke up from my catastrophic state of mind, I was able to hear that same woman, but I couldn’t interpret what she was saying because of my pain. … I just had to get to a place where I could hear what she was really saying, not what I was feeling,” adding that his new first lady never once changed who she was.

The “Undefeated” author and pastor showcased their love on the limited reality series “Shaunie & Keion’s Destination I Do.” They tied the knot in a tropical ceremony at the Aurora Anguilla Resort and Golf Club in March 2022.

In her recently released memoirs, Shaunie confessed that this time, for the first time in her life, she is experiencing the happiness that comes with being in love.
