Jennifer Lopez says her relationship with Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was ’emotionally draining’

Just before Jennifer Lopez entered the whirlwind that was “Bennifer,” she was in a high-profile relationship with Sean “Diddy” Combs. The pair dated on and off for two years before finally ending things in 2001. Lopez said the relationship came at a good time in her life. It became so emotionally draining that she was glad she was young all along.

Jennifer Lopez Opens Up About Why She Found Her Relationship with Diddy Exhausting

Lopez and Diddy met on the set of her music video for “If You Had My Love.” He quickly began to approach her, but it took her longer to warm up to him. Early on, before they were together, he told her he was in love with her.

“I thought, ‘This guy is crazy.’ I said, ‘You don’t even know me,'” she told Vanity Fair in 2011, adding, “I kept my distance from him, but then he kept calling me, and I think at first it was exciting. He was from New York, I was from New York, and we just spoke the same language and we both loved music. He was my mentor, and he was really nice at first.”

Their relationship quickly hit a difficult public patch following the 1999 New York nightclub shooting. Lopez, however, said it wasn’t the first time they had problems. She said they broke up multiple times throughout their relationship.

“It wasn’t a great time in my life,” she said. “It was terrifying. And before that, we had broken up and gotten back together and broken up again, and no one knew about it. It was very turbulent. It was emotionally draining towards the end. It was a good thing I was young.”

She admitted that she had made many mistakes in various relationships.

Lopez admitted that in her relationships with Diddy and others, she made the same mistake over and over.

“I wasn’t in touch with who I was, what I wanted, what I deserved, what I needed. It was more about the other person, and that’s where I made my mistakes,” she said. “It wasn’t even their fault; it was mine. I had to get to a point where I could say, I know what I want, I know what I need, I can’t let you do this, I can’t let this happen, I can’t let this happen.”

She said learning to tell herself she was worth more than these relationships helped her. She developed a greater sense of what she wanted from her romances.

Jennifer Lopez is reportedly disgusted with Diddy now

Years after their split, Lopez reportedly wants nothing to do with her ex. Earlier this year, a video of Diddy attacking his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, was leaked. While Lopez hasn’t publicly commented on the video, sources say she found it creepy.

“In the midst of everything Jen has to deal with in her life, she is aware and has seen what Diddy has done and is extremely disappointed,” a source told DailyMail.com. “Jen is not going to address the accusations or take the time to talk about them because it’s not her story to tell… Not that people forget, but her relationship with him a few years ago had its ups and downs. What he did and what he’s accused of is heartbreaking. It’s disgusting to her that someone she trusted so much at one point in her life has become a very damaged person. It’s disturbing.”
