Belated congratulations to Huma Abedin and Alex Soros, who announced their engagement on Wednesday. According to Page Six, the 38-year-old billionaire heir to George Soros’ fortune popped the question to the notoriously private former deputy chief of staff to Hillary Clinton six weeks ago, and the two are now celebrating in Italy.

“It happened… we couldn’t be happier, more grateful, more in love,” Soros wrote in an Instagram post, under which Lauren Sanchez, Dasha Zhukova, Jenna Lyons, Olivia Palermo, Scooter Braun and others flooded the comments with congratulations.

Abedin and Soros first went public with their relationship in February, after Soros posted a Valentine’s Day Instagram story of him and Abedin sitting in a Paris restaurant with roses on the table. The duo have kept a low profile since then, making a few public appearances, including sitting courtside together at a Knicks game (a rocky start, in fact) and attending the Met Gala together in May.

Abedin was previously married to disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner, who was sentenced to 21 months in prison for sexting a minor in 2017, the same year Abedin filed for divorce. She was rumored to be linked to Bradley Cooper in 2022 after reports of her being involved with Anna Wintour. Soros, meanwhile, is a philanthropist and investor who runs the Soros Family Foundation and the Open Society Foundations, a nonprofit that supports global democracy and human rights. George Soros — who donated more than $8 million to the Clinton campaign, of which Abedin was vice chair in 2016 — named Alex as the successor to his $25 billion empire last year. In a 2023 interview, Wall Street JournalAlex Soros said he plans to continue using family money to support liberal politicians as well as causes such as voting rights and abortion rights.

“The best way I can describe this relationship is effortless,” Abedin’s longtime friend told Page Six after the engagement. “After many tumultuous years for Huma, she is relaxed, happy and in love.” I am so happy for Huma and grateful for this sweet little tidbit of Democratic news. We needed this.
