Starmer says US relationship ‘stronger than ever’ as he meets Biden at White House – with help of personalised gift | Politics News

Sir Keir Starmer met Joe Biden at the White House for formal talks following the Prime Minister’s international stage debut.

The pair can be seen sitting together and laughing at one point as the prime minister said the “special relationship with the US is now more important and stronger than ever”.

Mr Biden called the US and UK the “best allies” and described the UK as the “transatlantic knot” that holds NATO together.

To strengthen relations between the two countries, Sir Keir donated Mr. Biden a personalised Arsenal shirt – with his name and the number 46 printed on the back, referring to his presidential number.

The Prime Minister is an Arsenal season ticket holder and the Downing Street team hoped the shirt would be a “personal gift” for both leaders, who met in the Oval Office.

The British leader also presents his counterpart with a copy of the Atlantic Charter, which paved the way for the creation of FOR THISwith amendments introduced by the then leader of the Labour Party, Clement Attlee.

Their meeting at the White House takes place after Mr. Keir met on Wednesday with the US president at the NATO summit in Washington, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the alliance.

He also spoke with other world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The prime minister, who has been in the role for less than a week, said he used his talks with Zelensky to emphasise that the change of government in the UK “has no bearing on the support we will provide”.

He told reporters in the U.S. capital that his talks with world leaders were “an opportunity to make sure that this relationship is reset and to be able to say how important our position is on the world stage – leading on issues like defense and security, climate change and energy.”

The summit is expected to confirm what U.S. and European officials have described as Ukraine’s “irreversible” path to NATO membership, but the alliance is also planning how to “secure” its future against Trump in the event that the former U.S. president returns to the White House after the November election.

Starmer shakes Biden’s hand

“When it comes to the age of members of the House of Lords, the fact is that our House of Lords is huge,” he said.

“We have over 800 members of the House of Lords, it’s just too many. We need to reduce that.

“So it’s not a reflection of how other representatives are elected in other countries, it’s about the size of the House of Lords.”
