Husband of daycare teacher arrested, charged with sexually assaulting at least three children

A Riverside man was arrested by police earlier this month after allegations surfaced that he sexually abused a 4-year-old girl at the daycare operated out of his home.

Antonio Chavez, 65, was arrested July 3 after being accused of sexually assaulting the girl while she attended a licensed family day care center run by his wife.

Antonio Chavez, 65, of Riverside, is pictured in this undated photo provided by the Riverside Police Department. Chavez was accused of sexually abusing at least three children who attended his wife’s daycare.

Chavez Family Daycare operates out of the family home located in the 18400 block of Blue Sky Street and has been a licensed child care provider since 2010.

After receiving the first complaint, the Riverside Police Department began investigating and contacting other families whose children attended the daycare.

Through the investigation, police were able to determine that two other children had been sexually abused by Chavez over the past three years while they were attending daycare at the home, but the crimes were never brought to light.

Police now fear there may be additional victims who have not yet been contacted. Anyone with additional information about the victims is asked to contact RPD Detective Victoria Mutuku by email or by calling 951-353-7945.

Chavez was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in downtown Riverside and is being held on $1 million bail.

A complaint against Chavez Family Daycare has been filed with the state licensing agency, police added.
