Prince Harry and Hugh Grant in ITV documentary ‘Tabloids On Trial’

Prince Harry and Hugh Grant will star in an ITV documentary focusing on their ongoing legal battles and involvement in the wiretapping scandal, titled Tabloids on trial.

The Duke of Sussex claims he has been targeted by journalists and private investigators working for News Group Newspapers (NGN) titles Sun and currently non-existent World Newswhich closed in 2011. In May, a London judge told the prince’s lawyers he could not expand the privacy claim to include allegations against media mogul Rupert Murdoch and presenter Piers Morgan.

In 2011, news emerged that some of the UK’s biggest stars and figures had allegedly fallen victim to a scandal that saw mainstream newspapers tap landlines and equip properties with listening devices in the name of journalism. NGN denied any illegal activity was taking place nearby Sun.

Grant, former footballer Paul Gascoigne and singer-songwriter Charlotte Church also appear in the documentary after they said their privacy was invaded by the tabloid press. (Grant settled the wiretapping case in April.)

In December, Justice Timothy Fancourt ruled in favour of Prince Harry in a 386-page Supreme Court ruling, finding that phone tapping, which in the prince’s case had taken place since 2003, was “widespread and routine” at Mirror Group Newspapers – and that executives had covered it up.

Prince Harry, who is breaking royal tradition in this fight by becoming the first member of the family to testify in open court in more than a century, also has a case pending against the British red top DailyMail.

ITV News’ Rebecca Barry will meet Prince Harry for his first major interview since the legal proceedings began, and the documentary “will follow his mission to continue to fight to expose the illegal tactics of the British tabloid press and explore what those behind Fleet Street really knew as the scandal unfolded.”

The programme will be broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX on Thursday 25th July.
