Four days before authorities say a Dover man shot and killed his wife and daughter before killing himself, the beneficiaries of his wife’s life insurance policy were changed, The Boston Globe reports.

Authorities said Rakesh “Rick” Kamal killed his wife, Teena, and 18-year-old daughter, Arianna, before turning the gun on himself in their $4 million, 21-room home on Dec. 28.

On Christmas Eve, a fax was sent to the insurance company holding Teena Kamal’s $1.25 million policy, according to the WorldFor three decades, Rick Kamal had been named as the primary beneficiary, with Arianna named as the backup or “contingent” beneficiary. The change, made just days before the family’s death, altered the policy so that Rick and Arianna Kamal would share the primary designation and Rick’s brother, Manoj Kamal, would be named as the contingent beneficiary.

In the months following the family’s death, a legal battle erupted between the couple’s siblings over Teena Kamal’s life insurance payout, beginning with Manoj Kamal filing a claim to recover the life insurance payout from his sister-in-law, the World reported.

Teena Kamal’s brother Sandeep Bedi ‘raised concerns’ with insurance company over circumstances of family death and change of beneficiary, report says World.

“It’s salacious and heartbreaking, but it’s not uncommon,” J. Michael Young, a Texas lawyer who specializes in life insurance litigation, told the BBC. World“Whenever there’s a million dollars on the line, it’s not uncommon to see fights.”

THE World previously reported that, unbeknownst to his family, Rick Kamal had racked up massive debts in the years leading up to the murder-suicide, culminating in a late December 2023 order allowing the family to be evicted from their Dover mansion.

Teena Kamal’s family said they had “no idea” about the financial situation.
